2019 saw a lot of changes in our Minnesota Multiplying Good community.  As the national organization rebranded from the “Jefferson Awards” to Multiplying Good, our community experienced transition too!

There is a new team on the ground in MSP both Angela Bellmont and Wendy Helgeson began in June.  Angela is focusing on supporting schools and our Students in Action program.  Wendy is using her connections to spread the word about Multiplying Good tools to #celebrategood with recognition and service for organizations and media partner. Wendy is also supporting Angela in finding new schools and opportunities to grow Students in Action.

The annual celebration in DC found the Champlain Park Students in Action team winning 2nd place nationwide!  Their work serving the communities homelessness population was recognized at the ceremony. The Champlin Park team collected 471 donated clothing items for Hope 4 Youth. They also raised $4,566 through a school wide fundraiser for My Very Own Bed and The Simpson House. The students also got to meet with Senator Tina Smith and share their great work while in DC.

In Rochester MN our media Partner KXLT selected Teddy Collins, who created T&K Basketball in 2013 in memory of his brother Rodney, who was killed at age 10 by a stray bullet. Over the last five years, the program that started with about 18 players has helped 200 young people find a positive influence. The purpose is to keep young kids off of the streets, and instead provide them with a positive outlet for their energies. Young people from across Southeast Minnesota between the ages of 14-21 can join the league at no cost. According to Mark St. Peter, the chairman of T&K’s Board of Directors, "Teddy defines a grassroots effort.”

To celebrate Champlain Park High School and Teddy Collins we held our first annual “Service on Tap” event in November at FINNEGANS brew house.  CEO Hillary Shafer arrived in Minnesota to share the goals of the organization and the achievements of the Minnesota leadership community.  Many new friends were introduced to our initiatives that are growing in Minnesota.

We are starting 2020 with a focus on engaging some new board members, finding additional schools for the SIA program and holding 2 events – one in the spring and one in the fall.  There is a lot to celebrate in Minnesota – and the momentum is real!  To find out more – contact Wendy Helgeson whelgeson@multiplyinggood.org
